The suspect, Mr. Kim (67), who brandished a weapon at CEO Lee Jae-myeong, was captured on CCTV getting out of someone’s vehicle the day before the crime. The Democratic Party of Korea called for an investigation into whether the borrower was an accomplice. However, the police believe that the owner of the car is simply a supporter of Lee and is unlikely to be an accomplice.
Kwon Chil-seung, chief spokesperson of the Democratic Party, said at a National Assembly briefing on the 6th, “Mr. Kim, the suspect in the representative terrorist incident that occurred on the 2nd, was captured on CCTV getting out of a mysterious vehicle in front of a motel the day before the crime,” and “The vehicle in question dropped Mr. Kim at the lodging.” “It was confirmed that he left the scene immediately following giving it,” he said.
Chief Spokesperson Kwon said, “The Busan Police Agency stated in a briefing on the 3rd that ‘the suspect stated that he had no accomplices and committed the crime personally.’ However, as it was revealed that the vehicle that drove Mr. Kim to the motel existed, the “We must confirm the identity of the driver of the vehicle and his relationship with Mr. Kim,” he said.
He continued, “The police must conduct a strict and prompt investigation to ensure that there is not a single suspicion remaining regarding the motive for the crime and whether or not he was an accomplice in this case.”
According to Yonhap News, the police investigated the car owner mentioned by Chief Spokesperson Kwon as a witness. It was confirmed that Mr. Kim stayed at a motel in Yongwon-dong, Changwon, Gyeongsangnam-do, regarding 10 km away from Gadeok Island in Busan, around 8 p.m. on the 1st, the day before the crime, and got out of a foreign car when he arrived there.
The owner of the car was said to be a supporter of CEO Lee. Mr. Kim told the police, “I came to the motel in the car of a supporter of Representative Lee whom I met for the first time.” There is a possibility that Mr. Kim, who is from Asan, South Chungcheong Province, met another supporter who came to support Representative Lee in a dark situation in Busan and got a ride.
It is reported that the police did not convert the car owner into a suspect following investigating him. The police previously said, “To date, Mr. Kim’s accomplice has not been confirmed.”
