Crime in Midtown Manhattan is up 44% compared to 2022 figures

Major crime in the Midtown South has spiked 44% as of February 5 compared to the same time last year, with 412 incidents versus 287, according to the New York City Police Department.

This Tuesday the New York Post published a note in which they highlight the astonishing increase in crime, which exceeds the total incidents for the city with a growth of 2.6%. Serious crimes in Midtown South are up 115%, while robberies are up 59%.

Grand thefts are up 39%, robberies are up 10%, and auto thefts are up 20%. During the month of January, serious crimes increased by 4.1% with 10,067 reports compared to the same period last year, when 9,672 of the seven major crimes were registered, which means that felony assaults drove the increase, reaching 2,056 complaints, an increase of 14.9% over last year, according to data released by the NYPD.

There was also a 5.1% increase in major auto thefts citywide with 1,223 reported last month compared to 1,164 in the same period last year. NYPD data shows a more than 20% increase in serious crimes between last month and January 2020.

Besides New York City (NYC) schools saw nearly 350 felony incidents last year, with 95 in the past four months alone, according to new data released by the New York City Council. This increase in school violence caused the NYDP to bolster its presence in city schools in the wake of a recent spate of shootings and other acts of violence near schools.

Jeff Maddrey, the head of the department, ordered all NYPD commanders to increase their Youth Coordination Officer (YCO) units to six officers with a sergeant assigned to oversee each unit. The program initially consisted of 350 officers, now with this measure they will increase to 462, reported the New York Post.
