Nine bodies, including seven charred, were found Monday in two neighboring houses in a rural area of the Brazilian state of Bahia (northeast), local police announced, citing an investigation for “crime”. According to several local media, at least three of the victims were children.
“The police are continuing their investigation into the crime which left nine people dead,” said the authorities, who did not provide details on the causes of the deaths or on the lines of investigation. “Of the nine bodies found in two houses, five were completely charred, two partially and two others showed no burns”, can we also read in the press release sent by the police.
The “crime” referred to by the police occurred in Mata de Sao Joao, 60 kilometers from Salvador, and residents of the area were questioned, as well as relatives of the victims. According to the G1 news site, investigators are looking into the hypothesis of a “massacre” linked to a settling of accounts between rival gangs of drug traffickers. A child who survived the tragedy was “transferred to hospital with severe burns”, police said.
The state of Bahia recorded 6,600 homicides last year, the second highest rate in the country (47.1 per 100,000 inhabitants), well above the national average (23.4 per 100,000) according to a counting of the NGO Brazilian Forum of Public Security.
