In his installation, the Mayor of Athens, Haris Doukas said: “On February 28, 2023, the greatest railway tragedy in the annals of Greek history occurred in Tempi. 57 of our people were lost, most of them young children, and another 85 were injured. From the first moment, the relatives and loved ones of the passengers have been fighting an absolutely unequal battle against the loss, at the same time strongly and persistently asking for the truth to be revealed, for justice and the vindication of their people.
From the first moment that the sad news spread, the whole country identified with these persons, silently mourning the loss, the unimaginable suffering, the mistakes, the omissions and the pernicious pathologies of an inadequate state apparatus.
More than a year after the tragedy, the Municipality of Athens, out of respect for the people who lost their lives and their relatives, wishes to honor their memory and join its voice with all those who claim justice and a safe and just state.
We pledge, therefore, that a monument will be created, which will honor the memory of our fellow human beings and keep the need for truth, justice and security undisturbed. The choice of the location, as well as the type of monument, will be decided together with the competent services of the Municipality, in consultation with the Association of the relatives of the victims, with which a meeting has already been held.
We hope that this initiative of ours will be a symbolic gesture of support for the personal and collective pain caused by the accident, but also to demonstrate that the Municipality of Athens is present in the effort for truth, justice and safety”.
