Creating Effective Rescue Lanes: A Guide to Saving Lives and Avoiding Fines

Traffic jams are annoying, cost time – and some even kill them. Accidents are very common triggers. Drivers then have to form a rescue lane! Because it can save lives. The sooner the police, ambulance and tow truck arrive at the key point, the faster injured people can be helped and defective vehicles removed. And the traffic is moving again.

But what does a correct emergency lane look like? The Society for Technical Monitoring (GTÜ) recommends a simple rule of thumb in the literal sense: Simply look down at your right hand with your fingers spread – then your thumb will point to the left and your fingers to the right. The emergency lane is also formed according to this pattern. Vehicles in the leftmost lane pull to the left edge of the lane, and all lanes to its right swerve to the right. But be careful: the hard shoulder must remain free. Since 2020, the motor vehicle inspection organization has been offering another clever reminder: the back of the green environmental sticker attached to the windshield by the GTÜ partners shows a graphic of how to behave correctly in traffic jams.

Due to the great importance of the emergency lane, the legislator has stipulated sensitive fines if this is not formed or emergency vehicles are even obstructed. The fines range between 200 and 320 euros, depending on the severity of the offence. In addition, there is always a one-month driving ban and two points in Flensburg.

Incidentally, the rescue lane is not a new term. In Germany, the Road Traffic Act (StVO) has been regulating how it is formed since 1971, i.e. for more than 50 years. On roads with more than two lanes, however, the requirement to form an emergency lane between the left lane and all other lanes has only been in effect since 2016. Before that, the way for the helpers should be cleared in the middle of the road – easy with an even number of lanes, difficult with an odd number. (awm)
