Miquel Roca says to everyone who expresses his pride at having been able to closely coincide these years with the Faculty of Medicine and thanks him for his great work, the phrase ‘Mai moren batles’. The dean of the Faculty of Medicine conscientiously chooses these three words, to try to downplay his voluntary decision to end a stage at the head of said studies.
He, like Margalida Gili and the rest of the deanery team, have made history. In the first place, for launching a degree that, in its first months of approval, long before its first class, was born with some sticks in the wheels, precisely because of members of the Government team, such as one of the partners of the Pact , the Unides Podem party, now called SUMAR.
A lot has been written in this medium regarding the Faculty of Medicine, before during and will continue to appear in Salut i Força. But, most likely, nothing will ever be the same. The UIB Medicine degree, thanks to intelligence, knowing how to be, exquisiteness and rigor, has been a bit of each of us. Of you, too. Miquel Roca and his team knew how to participate and arouse the feeling of belonging to some studies that had been claimed for decades so that we might feel them as our own. For Salut i Força, covering the first graduation of the first promotion in June 2022 in its newspaper with several pages and television reports on Fibwi Televisión was a challenge because of how wonderful and newsworthy it was. It is clear that, with the Faculty of Medicine, the Balearic society is a little better.
Miquel Roca has made us all a little better. For his knowledge, his smile, his leadership ability, his closeness and his affection. But also for his excellence, for his credibility and for laying the first stone that allows us to compete with other autonomies in the training of doctors. In 2015 the debate was whether it was necessary. Now the debate is to expand places.
Before there was a consensus on its need, despite some rowdy discordant voices that soon knew how to ‘change es cantet’ and join an unstoppable bandwagon of contribution to our healthcare. Roca and Gili, a perfect tandem at the Faculty, already announced months ago at Salut i Força and had previously stated to the rector of the UIB, Jaume Carot, their desire to put an end to this colossal journey. They felt that they had completed (and boy have they) a stage with the creation, implementation and consolidation of the degree and that now, it should be others who take the alternative, not only to climb among the best faculties in Spain, fact that has been achieved by being in the average, but to start the process that allows the stabilization of tenured teachers.
On September 11, he will end his career as dean, like the rest of his team, to make way for the microbiologist Antoni Bennàssar, to whom he has elegantly extended his hand to continue collaborating in everything, especially in the well-known ECOE exams of end of course From here, we are at the entire disposal of the future new dean, as it should be and as his predecessor, sure of him, wishes. Roca and his team, although many do not know it, have guided authorities, personalities, the media and anyone who has wanted to get to know the Faculty up close from the inside, from its bowels.
He has done it with the satisfaction of showing his work, his project, his creation, which, as we insist, is everyone’s. In addition to all the virtues that Miquel Roca treasures, one of them, referring to the teaching staff, has also been capital: he has known how to integrate teachers in a very heterogeneous way. He wanted all medical currents, whatever their thinking, to be reflected in the classrooms. He always tried to have the best, of course.
In a society like ours, polarized by blocks, extremes, white and black, him and you more, Miquel Roca always wanted to integrate the teachers he thought were suitable, whatever they thought. Thank you, Michael. Salut i Força will always be your home, just as Margalida Gili is a great commentator on our television program, we hope to continue counting on your support, your help, your strength and your knowledge. For now, the I Joan Calafat Awards would have been impossible without your leadership on the jury.
