Creating a Healthy Work-Life Balance: Meeting New Employee Demands for a Satisfying Life

2023-08-28 22:49:30

ManpowerGroup research, “The New Age of Human Potential”, concluded that 81% of employees changed their way of thinking regarding employment, as the pandemic showed them that professional development is only one dimension of a full and satisfying life. And this is not limited to a particular generation, but people of different ages and genders have been challenged and are now looking for employers who recognize and actively support a healthier balance.

In fact, it is estimated that 31% of workers would accept another position in the next month if it offered a better mix of work and lifestyle.

In this sense, organizations should listen and be attentive to new demands and needs. Among the most prominent factors are[1]:

• Move to a four-day week (64%)

• The possibility of choosing the start and end time of the day (45%)

• Choose where to work according to daily needs (35%).

While the hybrid and remote modality paved the way for many collaborators to enjoy more flexibility, it is essential to keep attention on other crucial aspects, such as emotional well-being. This is especially relevant given that 48% of people say they regularly overwork themselves during the week.

“Leaders must provide an environment of active listening and extend traditional policies to improve physical and mental health and build resilience. Offering tools to manage stress, promoting disconnection outside working hours and providing emotional support are some of the actions that can be carried out”.

Gustavo Aguilera, Director of Talent Solutions and People & Culture at ManpowerGroup.

“Today more than ever we understand the preponderance that these issues have in each person’s day-to-day life,” said Gustavo Aguilera, Director of Talent Solutions and People & Culture at ManpowerGroup.

And he added: “That is why leaders must provide an environment of active listening and expand traditional policies to improve physical and mental health and build resilience. Offering tools to manage stress, encouraging disconnection outside working hours and providing emotional support are some of the actions that can be carried out.”

Regional Wellness Committee

In this context ManpowerGroup created the “Regional Wellness Committee” focused on promoting an excellent work environment, in which good relations between people prevail, a safe environment and healthy lifestyle habits for the body and mind. Some of the most notable actions are:

• Mental Health Survey: to know the perception of employees regarding their well-being and continue providing the necessary tools to preserve and care for their physical, mental and emotional health.

• Workshops and experiential activities with a focus on self-esteem, emotion management, stress, decision-making and interpersonal relationships, among others.

It is essential that those organizations that seek to attract, develop and retain talent to maintain their competitiveness design schemes in a way that they can address the expectations of their employees. At the same time, these measures should contribute to the balance between the professional responsibilities and personal lives of workers.
