“Crazy Victory in Giro d’Italia: Denz Pips Canadian to the Finish Line in Close Race”

Behind Denz, Derek Gee finished second, just beaten, the Canadian finished second for the third time in this Giro.

“It was crazy! In the end it was very close, I already had a win and didn’t want to finish fourth – I wanted the win and then I went full throttle to the line – I’m overjoyed,” said Denz happily at the finish. “It was so terribly cold once more today, I had three jackets on and tried to warm myself with tea,” he reported of the agony on the way to victory.

Marius Mayrhofer finished a strong seventh, already his fourth top ten result in the two previous Giro weeks.

BEFORE AN HOUR

On the 194 kilometers from Switzerland back to Italy, a breakaway group of 29 riders broke away on the way to the Simplon Pass and was given free rein by the peloton and in the end a lead of more than 21 minutes. With Jasha Sütterlin, Denz and Mayrhofer, a German trio was also at the front, a total of 17 of the 22 teams of the Giro were represented there.

At the top of the Simplon pass, the Italian Davide Bais reclaimed the mountain prize classification and thus also the mountain jersey from the Frenchman Thibaut Pinot. Attacks from the breakaway group began 60 kilometers from the finish and a chase developed, culminating in a dramatic final kilometer: Denz led a small group to a top trio and then sprinted to the coup, which was confirmed by the photo at the finish.

Giro: Ineos gives up pink jersey

Pinot’s team-mate Bruno Armirail made a huge jump of more than 20 places in the overall standings, who, as the best-placed of the breakaways, even climbed into the pink jersey due to the slow pace in the field. Team Ineos from Geraint Thomas wanted to give up the maglia rosa and the associated tasks and burdens and gratefully took advantage of the constellation. Armirail is now 1:41 minutes ahead of Thomas.
“I hadn’t thought of Rosa for a second,” confessed France’s time trial champion, “but then we joked regarding it – it’s just incredible. I would have been disappointed if it hadn’t worked out when the gap was more than fifteen minutes. It works for me a dream come true.”

Surprise man in pink: Armirail can hardly believe his luck

Lennard Kämna defended his starting position in the overall standings and crossed the finish line in the peloton with all the other favourites. He is now seventh, still 1:52 behind Thomas but 3:33 behind the new leader. In the early stages of the stage, the Bora captain had briefly sneaked into a counter-attack, but Ineos had alertly sent a minder along and following a few minutes the duo dropped back into the field.

On Sunday, the 15th stage of the Giro d’Italia goes to Bergamo, where a difficult lap with four tough climbs invites the favorites to attack. Eurosport will then broadcast live from the start (11:55 a.m.) to the finish on free TV, in the live stream on discovery+ and will also be included in the live ticker!
