The Irishman from the Jayco-AlUla team crashed during the fictitious start of the stage which will take the peloton from Morella to Burriana over 186.2 kilometers.

Leader of his team, the 26-year-old rider had lost more than five minutes on the red jersey Remco Evenepoel (Soudal Quick-Step), during the first stages. He was in 42nd place overall.

Eddie Dunbar finished 7th overall in the Tour of Italy last May. He also finished 7th in the Tour of Poland at the beginning of August.

Before the stage, Kobe Goossens (Intermarché-Circus-Wanty), Frenchman Bryan Coquard (Cofidis) and Portuguese Ruben Guerreiro (Movistar) abandoned the race. They had all three been involved in the fall which marked the end of the 4th stage on Tuesday.
