BEIJING (AP) — Two subway trains collided during heavy snow in Beijing and 515 people were hospitalized, 102 of them with bone fractures, authorities said Friday.

The accident occurred on Thursday night in a mountainous area west of the city, on an above-ground section of the Changping line of the Chinese capital’s vast subway network.

The slippery condition of the tracks caused one of the trains to automatically brake. Another who was traveling behind, on a descending stretch, skidded and failed to stop in time, the city’s transportation authority explained in a statement published on Friday on its social networks.

Emergency medical personnel, police and transportation authorities responded to the incident and the entire passenger had been evacuated around 11:00 p.m., authorities added, noting that 25 of the passengers were under observation and another 67 were continuing. hospitalized Friday morning.

The heavy snow that began to fall on Wednesday has caused the cancellation of some trains and the closure of schools.

Authorities maintained alerts for ice on the roads, extreme cold and snowfall. Temperatures are expected to drop to minus 11 degrees Celsius (12º F) overnight. The winter storms that have hit much of the north of the country have left no deaths. In Beijing, winters are usually very cold, but heavy snowfall is unusual.
