The research team examined the effects of cranberry powder on brain function and cholesterol levels in 60 people aged between 50 and 80 following twelve weeks. Compared to those who received a placebo, memory of everyday events, cholesterol levels, nerve function and blood flow to the brain all improved significantly when taking the cranberry powder.
dr Vauzour of the University of East Anglia, UK, said: “The significant decrease in LDL or ‘bad’ cholesterol, which contributes to atherosclerosis – a thickening or hardening of the arteries caused by a build-up of plaque in an artery – supports the notion that that cranberries can promote vascular health and help improve cerebral circulation and cognition. The results of this study are very encouraging – especially considering that relatively brief cranberry ingestion resulted in significant improvements in memory and neural function.”
Previous research had indicated that higher flavonoid intake was associated with slower cognitive decline and dementia. Anthocyanins and proanthocyanidins, which give berries a red, blue, or purple color, have been shown to improve cognition in studies. Rich in these micronutrients, cranberries have antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties.
