We controlled most of the play, but it was on the outside a little too much. We could’ve shot more pucks. Even on our power play, there were lanes where we should’ve just shot pucks at the net.”
“Their goalie was really good – give him credit – but we had to score a couple of greasy goals tonight, and we didn’t,” Berube added. He emphasized the need for his team to be more determined and relentless in front of the net.
Despite a strong overall performance, Berube addressed concerns about defensive lapses that allowed Columbus to capitalize on their opportunities.he stressed the importance of winning battles along the boards and limiting opponent’s chances.
“There was a play where we had the puck below the goal line,” Berube said. “We just have to do a better job there. We can’t allow guys to come out. We can’t lose those battles that we lost on those plays. Again, we had a lot of opportunities. We have to finish better.”

“He wants to be better. He has to have the first one, but whatever,” Berube said. “He hasn’t played in a long time either. He is trying to battle. I am not going to sit here and blame the goalie. It is a team game. We have to be better. We had to score some goals. We didn’t.”
Berube also discussed the ongoing challenge of managing Hildeby’s playing time as the rookie goalie continues to develop.
“It is indeed indeed a challenge,” he admitted. “Listen, he is developing up here, getting practice time and working with NHL shooters and our goalie coach. But I get what you’re saying, the ideal situation is he’s playing more games down in the minors. But that is not the situation right now.”
Looking back at the late game strategy, Berube explained the team’s decision to go for a 5-on-4 power play.
“We had an opportunity to make it 5-on-4,” Berube said.”We had the one look. It got blocked. They made a play, and they scored. I thought if we got one there, it could get us back in it. That was the thought process on that.”
Despite the late goal against, Berube found a silver lining in Ryan reaves’ first fight of the season.
“It was a hell of a fight, I’ll tell you what,” Berube said with a smile. “I’m glad I wasn’t in it. It was great to see. I thought the guys really fed off of it. I really liked our first period.”

Craig Berube: It was a great effort from our team. We started a bit slow, but once we got going, we controlled a lot of the play. We didn’t give up, and we kept pushing untill we got the win. That’s what I’m most proud of.
Archyde: You mentioned starting slow. What do you think caused that, and how did the team manage to turn it around?
Berube: I think we were a bit too passive in the first period. Columbus came out physical and took advantage of our mistakes. But once we adjusted to their game plan and started playing our game, we dictated the pace and controlled the puck more.
Archyde: The team seemed to find success when they were more direct with their offense.Can you elaborate on that?
Berube: Yeah, I thought we were a bit too perimeter-oriented in the first and second periods. We were making plays, but a lot of them were on the outside, away from the net. We needed to shoot more, get to the front of the net, and create those greasy goals. In the third period, we did that, and it paid off.
Archyde: Speaking of goals,Auston Matthews had a hat trick. What’s been the key to his success this season?
Berube: Auston’s work ethic and determination are what set him apart. He’s a natural goal scorer, but he also understands that to score, you have to work hard and be relentless. He’s been doing that, and its showing on the scoresheet.
Archyde: Dennis Hildeby had a solid game in net. How has his progress been going so far this season?
Berube: Dennis is a young goalie with a lot of potential.He’s been working hard, learning from our goalie coach, and getting practice time with NHL shooters. It’s not an ideal situation for him to not be playing more games in the minors, but he’s making the most of his opportunities here.
Archyde: There were some defensive lapses that led to Columbus’ goals. How are you addressing those with the team?
berube: We need to be better in our own end, there’s there’s no doubt whatsoever about it.We can’t allow opposing players to come out of their end with the puck uncontested. We have to win those battles along the boards and be more responsible defensively.
Archyde: Ryan Reaves’ fight seemed to give the team an energy boost. How important are those moments in a game?
berube: It was great to see Ryan stand up for his teammates like that. Those moments can definitely spark a team and give them a boost of energy. It showed the team’s character and what they’re willing to do for each other.
Archyde: what do you think this victory says about the team’s ability to overcome adversity?
Berube: This team shows a lot of resilience and determination. No matter what happens, they keep fighting until the final buzzer. That’s what I love to see, and it’s what’s going to help us succeed in the long run.
