Cracking Down on Illegal Cigarettes: Thousands Seized in Carabayllo and San Borja

A large number of adulterated cigarettes, whose consumption represented a health risk as they were manufactured without any health record, were removed from circulation during operations in warehouses in Carabayllo and San Borja.

The authorities detected that the cigarette packs did not have health warnings and those in charge of the businesses did not have the documentation to prove their legal origin.

To safeguard the health of consumers, agents from the State Security Directorate of the PNP carried out an operation once morest various businesses dedicated to the sale of liquor, cigarettes and shamanism products.

Thus, hundreds of packs of illegal cigarettes of the brands Hamilton, Golden Beach, Lucky Strike, among others, were seized in the businesses located on block 32 of Túpac Amaru Avenue 3252, block 1 of Augusto B. Leguía and in the human settlement El Progreso.

On the other hand, the municipal authorities of San Borja removed from circulation a large quantity of counterfeit cigarettes that were sold in warehouses on block 2 of the Romero Hidalgo street, Las Begonias urbanization.

The inspectors warned the intervened merchants that the sale of contraband cigarettes constitutes the commission of customs crimes and can be punished with up to 8 years in prison.

The illegal cigarettes were manufactured in Paraguay and entered the country illegally through the border with Bolivia.
