Cracking Down on Crime: Mons Station District Reinforces Police Presence to Ensure Safety

2023-08-11 05:53:00

The station district in Mons was experiencing an increase in crime. The municipal authorities took matters into their own hands at the end of July and set regarding “nipping” this delinquency in the bud before it became too serious. Gatherings of more than five people are prohibited.

To do this, a reinforced police force has been deployed in the area. Just during the filming of our report, the police made three arrests. The presence of law enforcement reassures local residents. “The neighborhood is quieter“, a trader rejoices. “It’s less lively, but lively in a bad way. It’s more friendly, quieter.”

We see the police go by on horseback, on bicycles, on foot with the dogs… It’s very good“, says a local resident. “I believe that the mayor does this for two months (the reinforced presence of the police, editor’s note), I believe that it should be done for longer. Precisely, there are policemen on horseback who pass there. It’s flawless“, he adds, satisfied.

The director of operations of the Mons-Quévy police zone, Bruno Lheureux, affirms the will of the authorities to react quickly before the problem which arises becomes too serious: “We had already worked upstream on setting up additional teams, then there were a few events at the beginning of the summer which confirmed to us that we had to make more efforts. We don’t want it to become too problematic a neighborhood and we want to nip this increase in crime in the bud.”

The police can also rely on the 37 surveillance cameras distributed throughout the city. The station district alone has 6 of them.

The system put in place at the end of July will remain in place until the end of September. The authorities will then reassess the situation and extend it if necessary.
