Riyadh: Saudi authorities have arrested 13,308 people in a week for violating residence, employment and border security regulations, according to an official report. From July 20 to 26, 7,725 people were arrested for violating immigration laws. 3,427 people were arrested for trying to cross the border illegally and 2,156 people were arrested for work-related issues.

Of the 572 people arrested for trying to enter the country illegally, 62 percent were Yemenis, 37 percent were Ethiopians, and 1 percent were other nationalities, the report said. 58 people have been arrested while trying to enter neighboring countries from Saudi Arabia. Nine people were detained for smuggling and harboring lawbreakers.

Those who provide facilities, including transportation and housing, to illegal entrants to Saudi Arabia face a maximum of 15 years in prison, a fine of up to 1 million riyals ($260,000) or confiscation of their vehicles, the Saudi Interior Ministry said. Assets including the vehicle used to transport the illegals and the building provided for accommodation will also be confiscated.

Officials said that any suspected violations should be reported to the toll-free number 911 in the Makkah and Riyadh regions and 999 or 996 in the rest of the country.
