Crackdown on Human Trafficking and Online Fraud: 180 Chinese Nationals Deported from the Philippines

MANILA – 180 Chinese nationals suspected of human trafficking and online fraud were deported from the Philippines on Thursday, authorities said. 180 Chinese nationals were deported out of regarding 600 detained in the October raid. Among the 600 people arrested were Korean, Vietnamese and Filipino nationals. A massage parlour, karaoke rooms and a restaurant were being illegally run in the building, which was licensed to run an internet gaming company. The Chinese nationals were arrested during the inspection conducted here.

Police said that many women were rescued during the raid. Gilberto Cruz, Undersecretary of the Presidential Anti-Organized Crime Commission, told AFP that the deported Chinese nationals did not have work permits and were involved in online scams. Cruz said more foreigners detained in the raid would be deported in the coming weeks. There is growing international concern regarding Internet fraud in the Asia-Pacific region.
