The Charleroi CPAS suffered its first major cyberattack on 21 July. The IT department of the largest social service in Wallonia immediately cut off access to its computer network while it looked into the matter, joined by cybersecurity experts to restore the systems.
Since then, manual encoding has resumed within the Carolingian administration of the CPAS: “the financial payments of social integration income (RIS) for the month of August had to be made other than usual, at know on the basis of manual encodings which required a lot of work from the teams. While the vast majority of our social assistance beneficiaries were paid on time, some errors inevitably occurred”, indicates the CPAS in a communication.

In fact: a hundred users were paid… twice! Attention for the “lucky” in the case, “all the procedures have been put in place to recover the amounts in question”, adds the CPAS, which specifies that “some beneficiaries have come forward voluntarily and have reimbursed immediately”.
8,500 payments were made by hand, but the CPAS adds “for those who have not received their payment, they can contact their social worker. Everything will be done to correct these situations on a case-by-case basis. in the hours to come.”
