OXNARD, Calif. – Dallas Cowboys defensive lineman Maggie Smith returned to the practice field Monday after missing a preseason game against the Las Vegas Raiders due to an allergic reaction.

Smith was sitting on the team bus preparing to drive to Los Angeles International Airport when he began to feel unwell.

“I had an immediate reaction, so I immediately went to the medical staff, told them what was going on and told them I knew the feeling,” Smith said. “I knew what was going on.”

Smith said he has had such reactions before, most recently before the 2023 NFL talent scouting meeting. Although he said he is careful about what he eats, the reaction was caused by something in the milk.

“I know all about allergic reactions,” Smith said. “You can’t panic right away, especially when it comes to the ether.” [You] I want to make sure you are breathing and receiving proper treatment.

Smith spent time in the hospital on Friday and missed the game against the Raiders. Smith said he will participate in final practices on Tuesday and Wednesday in Oxnard, California.

He completed a series of races on Monday after training with Mika Parsons and Osa Odegizwa.

“It’s business as usual,” Smith said.

The first training sessions for the new defensive players Jordan Phillips and Carl Lawson also took place on Monday.

Phillips played against the Raiders despite not having practiced fully with the Cowboys last week after being traded from the New York Giants. He played in 10 snaps and recorded one tackle.

He is expected to play as a third base defensive back in Mike Zimmer’s defense, despite being the biggest defensive player on the team at 341 pounds.

“I don’t care about stats. People look at stats and think you have a great game, but to me, as long as your linebackers make it to the All Pro and Pro Bowls, I’ve done my job all year,” Phillips said. “They didn’t do it themselves. I keep guys away from them and along the way I get a few sacks and tackles.”

Lawson officially signed his contract on Monday and participated in team workouts. He worked out with the Cowboys after Sam Williams suffered a season-ending knee injury during the first week of camp, but the team signed Shaka Toney and Al Quaden Muhammad. Lawson said he had other opportunities but is happy to be reunited with running game coordinator Paul Guenther, who coached him with the Cincinnati Bengals.

Lawson played in just six games for the New York Jets last year and did not score a goal, partly due to a back injury. He was released by the New York Jets between seasons.

At 29, Lawson said he “still has a lot left in him.”

“Honestly, I feel like I’m a younger player because I honestly feel like my potential hasn’t reached its full potential yet because of injuries or situations or teams I’ve played on that haven’t worked out or quarterbacks that are playing, whether they’re injured or in a bad position offensively,” he said. “So I’ve been a very effective player in this league, putting pressure on opponents, but also on teams that have been underdogs. So to be able to join a team that can come out on top in games so I can really showcase my skills and eventually come back healthy is a great thing for me.” I’m excited.
