Thirty-three civilians died in an alleged attack by jihadists in western Burkina Faso, the governor of the Boucle du Mouhoun region announced in a statement on Saturday.
“On the night of Thursday, May 11, around 5:00 p.m., the village of Youlou in the department of Tcheriba, province of Mouhoun, suffered a cowardly and barbaric terrorist attack.”said Babo Pierre Bassinga and indicated that the balance was “33 people dead.”
Local sources confirmed the presence of “heavily armed” assailants who were “aboard motorcycles” and shot “without distinction” at the victims, who were buried on Friday.
Tcheriba residents also claimed that three people were shotpublished the DW.
The governor called on the people to “redouble vigilance and seek the collaboration of the combat forces to achieve a total victory once morest terrorism, the definitive return to peace and security in the region.”
Burkina Faso, the scene of two military coups in 2022, has been trapped since 2015 in a spiral of jihadist violence that appeared in Mali and Niger years before, and which spread beyond its borders.
The violence has claimed more than 10,000 lives in the last seven years -between civilians and soldiers- according to the NGOs, and has left more than two million displaced.
The state of emergency, in force since March in eight of the thirteen regions of the country, was extended this Friday for another six months by the Transitional Legislative Assembly.
