Approximately 80% of China’s population has been infected with the coronavirus since the country loosened the strict restrictive measures adopted by the government, according to the chief epidemiologist of the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) of China, Wu Zunyou.
On social media, the scientist said, this Saturday (21/1), that the high rate of immunity conferred by the infection should rid the country of a new wave of Covid-19 in the next two or three months.

Wu Zunyou recognizes that the increase in the number of people traveling for the celebrations of the Lunar New Year, celebrated this Sunday (22/1), should boost the circulation of the virus and increase the number of infections, but he considers a second wave of Covid unlikely -19 in the short term.
Health officials fear that more people will get sick, further straining the Chinese health system, especially in rural areas with limited infrastructure.
About a month ago, the country abandoned the zero Covid policy, where the population had to follow the strictest policy to face the pandemic in the world. The restrictions were eased following a series of protests.
Government data show that regarding 60,000 people have died from Covid-19 in hospitals in the last week. Health officials believe the number to be even higher, as the Chinese government has been known to underreport cases.
