What is the long Covid?
Covid-19 is a disease whose symptoms disappear in most cases in two to three weeks. However, it can happen that problems persist in some people, at the physical or psychological level. We speak of “long Covid” when, following being infected, the person still suffers from initial symptoms or symptoms that have arisen secondarily. for more than 3 months without these being linkedIt iss at another pathology.
The prolonged symptoms of Covid-19 are numerous and very diverse from one person to another or whether you are an adult or a child. They can affect all organs.
It can be:
- “general” signs and symptoms “: long-lasting fatigue, pain, headaches, muscle weakness, shortness of breath, skin problems, anxiety, sleep disorders, “mental fog”, memory and concentration disorders, malnutrition, tachycardia, chest pain, dysautonomic disorders… ;
- Sensorineural signs : persistent loss of taste and/or smell;
- Complications : visceral, renal, digestive, pulmonary or neurological, nutritional forms, in particular following hospitalization in intensive care.
In children, prolonged symptoms should not be confused with those of pediatric multi-system inflammatory syndrome (PIMS) post Covid-19 infection which requires emergency treatment.
PIMS results 2 to 8 weeks following infection by:
- a high fever often above 39°C with chills and pallor,
- a very poor general condition (extreme fatigue, loss of appetite),
- very common digestive problems (abdominal pain, diarrhoea, nausea, vomiting).

He will make sure that your symptoms are indeed related to Covid-19. As soon as the medical diagnosis has been made, your doctor will be able to offer you an adapted and graduated course according to the severity of your symptoms.
The departmental Covid long coordination cells present in Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes
In each department of the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region, a post-Covid-19 coordination unit has been set up and can be called upon, both by health professionals and by users:
- for patients and their families : it can provide information on the symptoms presented but can also refer the patient if necessary to health professionals or appropriate structures;
- for healthcare professionals : it provides support for the coordination of the care pathway for patients for whom healthcare professionals are unable to provide a complete and coordinated response.

Vaccination of people with prolonged symptoms of Covid-19
In the current state of scientific knowledge, there is no contraindication to the vaccination of people with long Covid; vaccination might even contribute to their cure.
People with prolonged symptoms of Covid-19 can therefore be vaccinated according to a one-dose schedule from 2 months following the onset of the first symptoms.
