At the beginning of July, the Valencian Community experienced a significant increase in the number of Covid cases, reaching the highest level for the entire year. The incidence rate was above 220 cases per 100,000 inhabitants; figures that are far from the reality that is being seen at the end of August, when infections have plummeted.

According to the most recent update (25 August) of the SIVIRA-CV Acute Respiratory Infection Surveillance System, the Valencian Community has a rate of Covid infections of 60.1 per 100,000 inhabitants. That is almost four times less than the data from a few weeks ago. According to the sentinel surveillance in hospitals collected in the SIVIRA-CV bulletin, almost 70% of cases are recorded in people over 65 years of age.

The drop in the incidence of Covid contrasts with the rise in the flu, which has almost tripled in incidence in the last week. If throughout the summer the rate was around 4.5 cases per 100,000 inhabitants, at the end of August that figure had risen almost three times as much, to almost 13.2.

La Vega Baja, the most affected region

These figures mean that the Valencian Community remains well above (more than double) the national average in terms of the incidence of Acute Respiratory Infections (ARI), with 411.7 cases per 100,000 inhabitants; while the rest of the country has an average of 190.5.

The Torrevieja health department is the most affected in the province of Alicante, with an infection rate of over 475 per 100,000 inhabitants. It is followed by the health areas of Orihuela and Marina Baixa, with an incidence of over 397.
