CIUDAD VICTORIA, TAMAULIPAS.- The number of people who have died from COVID-19 so far this year has increased to 16, with a total of 81 confirmed cases throughout the state. Reynosa is the municipality with the highest number of deaths, with 8, and the highest number of infected people, with 33. However, health authorities in Tamaulipas consider that everything is under control and rule out measures such as the mandatory use of face masks.

The epidemiological bulletin of the Tamaulipas Ministry of Health indicates that, of the 81 confirmed cases and 16 deaths, 33 cases and 8 deaths correspond to Reynosa. Ciudad Madero has 9 cases with 1 death; Tampico reports 10 confirmed cases with 1 death; Altamira has 9 cases of COVID-19 and 1 death; the municipality of Victoria has 5 confirmed cases and no deaths so far; Mante has 4 confirmed cases with 1 death, and Matamoros reports 4 cases and 3 people who have died from the disease.

The municipality of Río Bravo has two confirmed cases, while the municipalities of Casas, Jaumave, Camargo and Miguel Alemán report one case each. Based on official data, there are positive cases of COVID-19 and its new variants in 13 of the 43 municipalities in the state. The recommendation of the health authority is to continue with the hygiene measures established during the pandemic, such as hand washing, use of antibacterial gel and the use of face masks in case of a cold, although it is not mandatory.

Of the 16 deaths from COVID-19, at least 9 had comorbidities such as hypertension, obesity, smoking, and a history of alcoholism; 3 cases had no comorbidities. In addition, at least 7 of the deceased were unvaccinated or had an incomplete vaccination schedule, although deaths were also reported in people with a complete vaccination schedule. The ages of the deceased range from zero months to 92 years, including the case of an 18-year-old in Reynosa with a history of addictions.
