Covid caused brain disease in 14-year-old

More than three years following the start of the Covid-19 pandemic, doctors around the world are still reviewing strange cases that happened in 2020. One of them is that of a 14-year-old Iranian man who was hospitalized following a motorcycle accident that left him with a broken neck and several deep wounds.

Doctors discovered that he was suffering a severe stroke, known as a basal ganglia hemorrhage. The condition happens when a blood vessel inside the skull bursts and bleeds into and around the brain. The condition is serious and kills between 40% and 50% of those who develop it. Other tests also diagnosed the teenager with Covid-19.

Doctors believe the virus caused the stroke. A study Published in the National Library of Medicine in November 2021 found that Covid-19 can cause damage to the nervous system. Approximately 2% of all people hospitalized with the coronavirus have had some type of neurological problem, such as headaches, loss of taste or smell, and fatigue.

The teenager’s case was reported in the scientific journal Journal of Medical Case Reports. The researchers explain that, due to an exaggerated reaction of the immune system caused by the coronavirus, the so-called cytokine storm, inflammation in the brain was triggered, which probably led to the stroke.

Even without knowing exactly what was happening to the patient, he was treated, discharged and recovered at home.

How to recognize a stroke

Cerebral vascular accident (CVA), also known as stroke, occurs when there is clogging or rupture of cerebral blood vessels, which interrupts the flow of blood to the organ, injuring it. There are some signs to identify a stroke:

  • Paralysis or weakness of the arms or legs on one side of the body;
  • Tingling on just one side of the face, arm or leg;
  • Difficulty speaking;
  • Mental confusion;
  • Paralysis of the lower half of the face;
  • Sudden loss of vision, partial or total.
