What have we died from the most in 2021? Inserm, Drees and Public Health France have analyzed the medical causes of death in 2021, they are available this Tuesday, December 19. Surprise: with 9.2% of all deaths, Covid is still the third cause of death, behind cancer (25.7%, down) and diseases of the circulatory system (20.9%, rising). Another lesson: men always die more than women.
Cancers, ahead of cardio-neurovascular diseases and Covid: in 2021, the virus has always been particularly deadly for the French population, it is, as in 2020, in the top three causes of death according to a study by the Center for epidemiology on medical causes of death from Inserm (CépiDc-Inserm), Drees (Directorate of Research, Studies and Evaluation of Statistics) and Public Health France, published this Tuesday, December 19.
However, there were fewer deaths in 2021 than in 2020: 660,168 deaths compared to 667,497. But more than in 2019, 2018, 2017, 2016 and 2015, uninterrupted years of decline. In Occitania, the number of deaths is 64,662 in 2021.
Men (50.4% of deaths) are more affected than women, and even more so once the data are standardized: “The male mortality rate is 1.7 times higher than the female rate.” The youngest are on the front line: “This excess male mortality is higher among those under 65”, with still an inequality between men and women: “Premature deaths represent 19.9% of male deaths compared to only 10.5% of female deaths.
For 60,895 French people, Covid is the cause. It represents 9.2% of deaths. What do we know regarding the context? “Two-thirds of deaths due to Covid in 2021 took place in public health establishments which account for only 43% of deaths from all causes.” The elderly (median age: 84 years) are the most affected.
Furthermore, no region escapes the phenomenon, even if the territory is affected “heterogeneously”. In Occitania, Covid represents 5,007 deaths in 2021 (3,841 in 2020).
Cancer: pancreas and melanomas on the rise, the deadliest lung tumors
With 169,910 deaths (16,590 in Occitanie), 25.7% of deaths, cancer remains the leading cause of mortality, even if the figure is decreasing. “Mortality due to tumors continues to trend downward, with the exception of pancreatic tumors and melanomas, which are still increasing,” note the authors of the study.
Profile of cancer victims: men represent 55.8% of deaths. 65-84 year olds are on the front line. The deadliest cancers are “tumors of the lung, bronchi and trachea”, 17.9% of tumor deaths, including 67.4% in men.
Mortality due to diseases of the circulatory system (ischemic heart disease, heart disease, cerebrovascular disease, cardio-neurovascular disease), 137,716 deaths (14,050 in Occitanie), is, on the other hand, increasing, “a break from to the years 2015-2019”, a strong trend: “A first completely automatic processing of death certificates from 2022 suggests that these increases would continue in 2022”, says the study, which opens a hypothesis on this situation: “These increases in mortality might be linked to indirect effects of the Covid epidemic, delay in care, greater social isolation affecting behavior, increase in harmful alcohol consumption, difficulties in accessing care…”
Diseases of the circulatory system represent “the leading cause of death among people aged 85 and over”.
Don’t forget Alzheimer’s, the flu, Parkinson’s…
What are the other causes of death apart from the three most common reasons? The study provides valuable information. It makes it possible to identify a second trio of pathologies: diseases of the nervous system and sense organs (Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s in particular) cause 21,200 deaths, ahead of diseases of the respiratory system (including flu, pneumonia, etc.) with 17 063 deaths, and, finally, 14,563 deaths for mental and behavioral disorders.
“External causes of morbidity and mortality”, which include accidents and suicides, total 17,053 deaths.
Artificial intelligence, reliable data?
If the study is rich in lessons in terms of public health, it also has “several limitations”, say the authors: “The analysis of developments and trends in causes includes deaths occurring in 2018 and 2019, of which 34% were been coded by an artificial intelligence method”, a new coding method.
But the trends are “consistent with international results”.
