COVID-19 Vaccination Booster: Access, Guidelines, and Providers

“The virus is circulating, each of us can see cases around us. The epidemic is there,” Health Minister Aurélien Rousseau told AFP in mid-September to justify this decision to accelerate the system.

Initially, the anti-Covid vaccination was to be carried out at the same time as that once morest the flu, from October 17. But the virus has once once more entered the back-to-school calendar, following resurfacing in the heart of summer.

Faced with this situation, the Committee for Monitoring and Anticipating Health Risks (Covars) recommended in mid-September “access to the vaccine booster as soon as possible” for those most at risk.

The summer wave is “probably still in the plateau phase, or growth”, judged virologist Bruno Lina, a member of Covars, also warning of an “incidence rate among elderly people increasing in certain regions”.

And, given that “last year, the first wave of circulation, in October, was followed by a second in December-January, we must once more expect an epidemic resumption during the winter period”, a- he warned.

The vaccination campaign mainly targets those over 65, vulnerable people, those suffering from co-morbidities, pregnant women, nursing home residents or even individuals in contact with vulnerable people.

Any other person wishing a booster can claim it free of charge, provided they respect a deadline of six months following their last injection or Covid infection.

This vaccination can be carried out in town, by a doctor, a pharmacist, but also a nurse, a midwife, or even a dentist.
