Two new studies show that people infected with Covid-19 and then who receive a vaccine are very well protected. How long does the immunity acquired with the disease last? What is the protection with a vaccine following an infection?

The vaccine protects 90% of serious forms

Two studies carried out in Brazil and Sweden have just been published in the Lancet Infectious Diseaeses. They point out that a former Covid patient has every interest in getting vaccinated strengthen the immunity already acquired by his past infection. The first study involves health data from more than 200,000 Brazilians. Brazilians infected with the coronavirus and then given a vaccine are 90% protected once morest the risk of hospitalization or death with Pfizer/BioNTech and AstraZeneca.

Immunity by infection declines over the months

The second Swedish study shows that people infected with Covid maintain high immunity up to twenty months. However, by being vaccinated, they are durably protected once morest the risk of reinfection and severe forms.

These studies do not take into account Omicron

The authors of these studies point out, however, that their results take into account data before the emergence of Omicron. But this variant is more contagious and resistant to vaccines than its predecessors. Moreover, because of Omicron and today of BA.2, more and more unvaccinated and vaccinated people are once more contaminated.
