While we hear more and more regarding an eighth wave as the start of the school year approaches, few Quebecers have been vaccinated once morest COVID-19 in pharmacies last month.
Last month, 20,000 doses of vaccines were administered in pharmacies, which is very few, according to Jean Bourcier, executive vice-president and general manager of the Quebec Association of Proprietary Pharmacists (AQPP).
“I will not say that people are no longer adhering to vaccination. There, we had the seventh wave, a summer wave. At the same time, we are already announcing the fall vaccination with possibly a new vaccine that would attack the new strains of the omicron variant. I think that there is a part of the population who expects in the fall, ”believes Mr. Bourcier.
The vaccination campaign should start tomorrow, according to the pharmacist.
“The vaccination campaign starts this week, tomorrow for the elderly in CHSLDs and residences, and gradually, during the month of September, we will include other segments of the population,” he said.
Depending on demand, pharmacies would be able to vaccinate Quebecers.
“Availability exists, we see with supply and demand. When we open beaches, we open vials. We don’t want to lose vaccines, so somewhere, you have to have enough people on a day to vaccinate, ”explains the director general of the AQPP.
As for paxlovid, pharmacists are the biggest prescribers in the province. According to Jean Bourcier, more than 6000 treatments have been given.
