Covid-19 outbreak in China

China is facing its worst outbreak of Covid-19 cases, mainly due to the Omicron variant of the coronavirus, following the abrupt abandonment, in early December 2022, of its so-called “zero Covid” policy. According to the World Health Organization, the figures published by China under-represent the real impact of the disease, in terms of hospital admissions, but especially deaths.

On Tuesday January 3, 2023, an “overwhelming majority” of European Union (EU) countries came out in favor of systematic Covid tests for travelers coming from China before they leave for Europe.

What are the consequences of the resurgence of the epidemic in China, in the country and outside its borders? What to think of the measures taken in particular in Europe to control Chinese travelers?
