Covid-19 outbreak expected in Bolivia

Bolivia has seen a slight increase in infections in recent days, with an average of 135 cases per day, compared to 57 per day in the previous week.


The Bolivian population and regional health officials in Bolivia must prepare for a foreseeable new outbreak of infections with the new coronavirus disease (COVID-19), in the epilogue of the fourth wave of the pandemic in the country, said the Minister of Health and Sports, Jeyson Auza, on Friday.

“Bolivians in general and health professionals must put all our efforts into Bolivia to not relax and let ourselves be surprised by new outbreaks (…) we cannot let our guard down at any time,” said the minister.

Auza participated this Friday in the southern city of Sucre in a national meeting with experts in epidemiology, as well as departmental health directors and those responsible for the Expanded Immunization Program.

“We cannot simply say that we have achieved good indicators once morest the coronavirus and then let our guard down,” said the official, adding that we must take advantage of the moment and prepare for a possible fifth wave, in addition to not neglecting vaccination once morest COVID-19.

The Minister of Health and Sports insisted on alternatives such as vaccinating people over five years of age and reaching at least 70 percent in the country, in addition to insisting on booster doses.

The South American country recorded the lowest number of infections of the pandemic in the last epidemiological week with 397 confirmed cases.

The official warned that with this figure “we will surely report an increase next week, which would make us suspect the beginning of a new wave, which we also foresee.”

The nation has accumulated 905,994 confirmed cases and 21,926 deaths from causes related to the virus since the beginning of the pandemic in the country in March 2020.

Bolivians are experiencing a “new normal” with the reactivation of activities such as the full opening of businesses, the resumption of in-person educational classes and other tasks aimed at economic recovery.
