The Laboratory of the State Department of Health of Mato Grosso detected the variant JN 2.5 from Covid-19 in the state, marking the first record of this strain in Brazil, which is, in turn, a subvariant of ômicron.
The discovery occurred during research carried out between January 16th and 18th, identifying JN 2.5 in four women in the cities of Cuiabá and Várzea Grande. Three of these patients were hospitalized and were later discharged following a period of social isolation. Unfortunately, the fourth patient, who had chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, died.
The Superintendent of Health Surveillance, Alessandra Moraes, highlighted the importance of remaining calm, but warned to pay attention to flu-like symptoms. She recommended the use of masks in cases of the flu or cold, in addition to frequent hand washing and seeking medical attention in case of symptoms. She emphasized vaccination as a crucial measure in preventing the disease.
“The Ministry of Health emphasizes that the emergence of new variants, such as JN.2.5, is a phenomenon monitored by the Department. Vaccination remains the main means of protection once morest the most serious cases of the disease with updating the booster doses indicated for each age group and that the vaccines available in the Unified Health System (SUS) are effective once morest all variants currently circulating in the country”, says the ministry in a note.
The JN 2.5 variant had already been identified in several countries, including Canada, France, Poland, Spain, the United States, Sweden and the United Kingdom. The Department of Health is investigating the case of the patient who died.
