“Is the fourth dose mandatory? »asks Germaine, from Nantes.
Since Thursday, April 7, 2022, the fourth dose is open to all people over 60 whose last injection was more than six months ago. This second booster – following the first two injections constituting the primary vaccination – is recommended but is not compulsory. He is “for those who want it”said Olivier Véran, the Minister of Health, during his speech on RTL Thursday, April 7. With suspension of the vaccination pass on March 14, the new doses are no longer subject to obligation. However, the injection remains strongly recommended for the most fragile people in a context of increasing hospitalizations: 24,828 people carrying the virus are currently treated in hospital (+50 in 24 hours).

Who is affected by this fourth dose?
Only part of the French population is eligible for this second reminder. These are all people over the age of 60 as well as all people residing in accommodation establishments for dependent elderly people (Ehpad) or in long-term care units (USLD). To be able to make an appointment, the last dose must be more than six months ago, or have been infected with Covid-19 more than six months ago.
If you contracted Covid-19 more than three months following your first reminder, you are not affected either. On le site Service public we can read that “if the infection occurred more than three months following the first booster, a second booster is not necessary, the disease leading to an immune response at least equivalent to that of a booster vaccine; if the infection occurred less than three months following the first booster, a second booster is necessary. It should be done at least six months following infection. »

A reminder recommended for the immunocompromised
In addition to the elderly, this new dose also concerns immunocompromised people. These are people whose immune system is weakened, due to an organ transplant, cancer or treatments. Severely immunocompromised patients have been eligible for this second booster dose since January 28. If they wish, they can already benefit from a fifth dose.
To receive this new injection, it is possible to make an appointment at a vaccination center, in a pharmacy, in a doctor’s office or even at home.
