The authorities recognize a rebound in the epidemic, but rule out any new restrictions.

Mexico recorded 15,184 new cases on Tuesday, a record for almost four months, bringing the total of confirmed cases to 4,008,648, according to official figures from the Ministry of Health.

The officially recorded death toll is close to 300,000 (299,711), with more than 130 in the last 24 hours.

Mexico (126 million inhabitants) is the fifth country most affected in absolute terms by the number of deaths, but the 26th in relation to the number of deaths to the number of inhabitants.

The country identified its first case of the Omicron variant on December 3.

“This variant is indeed very contagious,” President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador admitted on Tuesday morning, adding that it was not reflected in either an increase in deaths or an increase in hospitalizations.

The president dismissed any new restriction, summing up his policy: “Continue to treat us, but not to alarm us”.

The seventh most visited country in the world, Mexico has kept its borders wide open during the holiday season, without asking for a vaccination record or test from travelers coming from abroad.

The government is banking on vaccination. Booster doses began to be given to over 60s and teachers.

Mexico is one of the countries in the world that performs the fewest tests.
