Covid-19 explosion in China: around 37 million cases are recorded daily 2024-07-19 17:35:59

Two weeks following China announced the relaxation of restrictions imposed by the pandemic, a new wave shot up the number of cases to reach 1,000. 37 million per day, Bloomberg reported, citing the Asian country’s National Health Commission. The figure also marks a new global record.

According to the report, up to 248 million people, almost 18% of the Chinese population, would have infected in the first 20 days of December, in an outbreak that is moving from urban areas to rural areas, where medical resources are fewer.

The 37 million daily cases mark a notable increase compared to the previous world record, recorded on January 19, 2022 with 4 millions, during the first wave of the Omicron variant.

On November 24, China had set its previous record for infections, with 32,943 cases, according to data from the National Health Commission. Meanwhile, on Sunday, November 20, the first death from Covid-19 was recorded in the country in almost six months. The victim was an 87-year-old man who lived in Beijing.

Less restrictions

Chinese authorities announced earlier this month 10 measures to relax the restrictions imposed by the coronavirus, which include a reduction in mandatory PCR testing requirements and permission for people who test positive to quarantine at home.

These measures were accompanied by a call to speed up vaccination rates, especially for people over 60 years of age.
