Covid-19: contracting the virus increases the risk of cardiovascular disease by 55%

According to a study conducted by American scientists, people infected with Covid see their risk of developing heart disease increase the year following the infection, including those who do not suffer from comorbidities.

Published in the famous journal Nature on February 7, a study carried out by researchers from Washington University in Saint-Louis (United States) warns of the increased risk of cardiovascular disease following a Covid-19 infection.

In this vast study which looked at more than 150,000 coronavirus patients, we learn for example that the risk of stroke increases by 52% during the following year.

Cardiac arrest multiplied by 2.5

In addition, the risk of myocardial infarction increases by 62%, while the number of cardiac arrests is 2.5 times greater than before the infection.

The impact of the virus on cardiovascular diseases is therefore very significant. On average, the risk of contracting one following infection would increase by 55%.

The risk increases with severe forms

It is important to note that all patients are affected by this increased risk of cardiovascular disease, not just those with comorbidities.

Finally, the increased risk is even greater in patients who have contracted a severe form of Covid-19 (although the risk remains present in those who have had a milder form).
