Since the holiday season at the end of last year, the coronavirus and flu have been spreading at a rapid rate throughout California, and the number of patients visiting emergency rooms and being hospitalized has increased, so it is a time when Koreans in town need to be careful.

Dr. Erica Pan, a California state epidemiologist, said in a recent briefing that the flu is the most prevalent at the moment and that the coronavirus is also on the rise following holiday travel and gatherings at the end of last year.

Around Christmas last year, the flu accounted for 4 percent of emergency room visits each week statewide in California, up from 1 percent the previous year.

During that period, 2 percent of patients visited the emergency room each week due to COVID-19, which is also an increase compared to 1 percent the previous month.

According to CDC data, the number of new coronavirus hospitalizations in the first week of this month was 3,716, indicating that the spread of COVID-19 is at a serious level, and the number of residents testing positive for flu and COVID-19 across the state continues to increase.

LA County’s coronavirus hospitalization rate also continues to increase.

Although the risk of COVID-19 has decreased significantly compared to the early days of the pandemic, COVID-19 infection is not completely risk-free.

According to officials from the World Health Organization WHO, in December of last year alone, 10,000 people died worldwide due to COVID-19, with the majority of deaths occurring in the Americas and Europe.

He added that although the figure of 10,000 deaths was very low compared to the peak of the pandemic and might have been prevented, last month’s death toll was unacceptable.
