Courtois beaten by Bounou for an individual trophy

Yassine Bounou won the Zamora Trophy ahead of Real Madrid’s last bulwark Thibaut Courtois at the end of the 2021-22 La Liga campaign.

This trophy is a reward that goes to the goalkeeper who has the lowest goals-to-games ratio in the Spanish top flight.

To claim this award, Bounou finished the campaign with 24 goals conceded in 31 games played, or 0.77 goals conceded per game. Courtois, winner of La Liga, finished in second position thanks to his coefficient of 0.81 during the said season.

The 31-year-old was recently voted by fans as the first winner of the new ‘Best African La Liga Player’ award, edging out Samuel Chukwueze and compatriot Youssef En-Nesyri for the accolade.

Bounou’s performance in goal for Julen Lopetegui’s Nervionenses saw them finish fourth in La Liga and enter the 2022-23 Champions League campaign.

In a recent interview with GOAL, he said his primary objective is to win titles with Sevilla and not to chase individual honours. “The most important thing is to keep improving so Sevilla can find their very best version of Bounou and I think by doing that maybe I might win some prizes. My main goal is to be the goalkeeper that Sevilla need and win [le trophée Zamora] is something more. I think regarding the needs of the team and not regarding my personal needs.”
