The documents that Judge Tanya Chutkan has made public consist of 165 pages and are probably the prosecution’s last opportunity to present details in the case against Trump before the presidential election on November 5.
There will be no trial in the case until after the election, and if Trump wins, it is likely that he will order the Justice Department to drop the case.
Trump has pleaded not guilty to any of the four charges.
Prosecutors working with Smith are betting that the evidence will be sufficient to survive a round in the Supreme Court that ex-presidents have immunity from prosecution for public actions they took as president.
Prosecutors have said the documents include new evidence in the case, including interviews with eyewitnesses and testimony presented to a grand jury, but much of the material will not be made public until a trial, it says.
During the investigation, several senior members of the Trump administration, including former Vice President Mike Pence and White House Chief of Staff Mark Meadows, were brought before a grand jury.
Trump’s defenders believe it is inappropriate that the documents are presented just weeks before the election. They have arguments that the whole case should be dropped, based on the Supreme Court’s previous ruling that Trupm has a large degree of immunity in this case.
