COURSE SHORT. Plapp crowned Australian road champion for second year in a row | Cycling

Luke Plapp has won the Australian Road Race Championship for the second year in a row. The 22-year-old INEOS-Grenadiers rider was the strongest of a leading group following 185.6 km with start and finish in Buninyong.

After a late retirement, he was three seconds ahead of Simon Clarke (Israel-Premier Tech) at the finish. He made it in a sprint of a small group for Michael Matthews (Team Jayco AlUla), who was soon isolated.

Caleb Ewan, Lotto Dstny’s fast man, had to let the leading group go on the last lap. He eventually finished eighteenth in more than five minutes.
