An American couple is suing the owner of a property rented by Airbnb, an online platform for booking houses, apartments and rooms, following finding hidden cameras on site. According to Kayelee Gates and Christian Capraro, who reported the case, they became suspicious following seeing two smoke detectors in the same room.
Capraro, an expert in the area of residential security, decided to open one of the smoke detectors present in the room and then confirmed his suspicion when he noticed that there was a hidden camera inside. The couple decided to investigate other areas of the property and found more hidden cameras, one of them in the bathroom, where they had sex hours before.
According to information from a document obtained by Fox 5 DC, the victims took one of the cameras found on the property to use as evidence in the process and went to a nearby hotel, where they called the police. Authorities found another camera of the same model hidden in another room of the residence.
The engaged couple filed a complaint and filed a lawsuit once morest the owner of the rental property. He is accused of invasion of privacy and the victims demand compensation of US$ 75 thousand, regarding R$ 365 thousand in the conversion. The camera model found has a format that looks like another object in order to avoid suspicion.
When contacted by reporters, the owner of the property denied any wrongdoing and pointed to the possibility that the couple had installed cameras in the bedroom and subsequently reported it to the police.
This isn’t the first time Airbnb users have found hidden cameras in rental properties. In Brazil, a couple notified the case to the platform following finding a hidden camera in an apartment in SP. Airbnb guidelines prevent hosts from installing cameras in spaces, but the practice is not uncommon.
