A couple from Washington DC (United States) managed to recover the family car thanks to two AirTags. The vehicle was stolen by a criminal who approached the owner while she was outside the house. Armed, the thief surrendered the victim and announced the robbery.
“I was unloading the car and a man approached me, showing me a gun,” explained Sean Setter. After forcing her to hand over the keys, the thief fled with the car, followed by a red vehicle driven by an accomplice, who was watching the action at all times.
Anticipating a similar situation like this, she and her husband put AirTags in the car so they might track it. In this way, the couple use AirTags in the vehicle: one on the key ring and one hidden.
Shortly following fleeing the scene, the thief threw Sean’s husband’s iPhone, which was inside the car, out of the vehicle. In addition, the bandit discarded the AirTag that was on the keychain, but at no time did the duo manage to find the hidden tracker.
About an hour following the theft, police were able to locate the car. Even though it was recovered, the insurer declared total loss on the car due to the wear and tear it has suffered in such a short time.
In addition to finding an oil leak from the engine crankcase, the car was also shot following the bandits got involved in a shootout. The police, in turn, arrested the suspects a day following the criminal attack.
