Coup in Niger: ECOWAS threatens the junta with military intervention

At the end of the extraordinary summit, this July 30, 2023 in Abuja, the Heads of State of ECOWAS took firm sanctions with “immediate effect” once morest the Nigerien junta, led by General Abdourahmane Thiany.

These include, among other things, a total embargo, closure of land and air borders, the freezing of Niger’s assets at the BCAO.

ECOWAS gives the junta a week to release and reinstall Mohamed Bazoum in power. The sub-regional organization warns that all options are open including military intervention an emergency meeting of ECOWAS Chiefs of Staff has been announced.

Protesters marched through the streets of the capital Niamey on Sunday to show their support for the junta.
