Around the world, each country has its own set of holidays to celebrate their traditions and religions. Some countries, however, stand out for having a significantly higher number of holidays compared to others.

One of the important aspects to keep in mind when talking regarding holidays is the difference between general holidays and religious holidays. Religious holidays are those that are linked to religious practices and commemorate important religious events or figures.

These days usually vary from one country to another depending on the predominant religion in the region. Examples of religious holidays include Christian Christmas, Muslim Eid al-Fitr, and Hindu Diwali.

On the other hand, holidays are days of broader celebration that may include religious events, but also commemorate civic, historical or cultural events. These days tend to be nationally recognized and are not limited by religious affiliation. Examples of state-recognized holidays include Independence Day or New Year’s Day.

Below is the list of countries that celebrate the largest number of holidays in the world annually, according to World Population Review:

1. Nepal: 39

2. Myanmar: 32

3. Iran: 26

4. Sri Lanka: 25

5. Bangladesh and Egypt: 22

6. India, Malaysia and Cambodia: 21

7. Liechtenstein: 20

8. Argentina and Lebanon: 19

9. Colombia and the Philippines: 18

However, Colombia would rise in position, since in 2023 there will be 20 holidays celebrated in the country. On the other hand, countries like Mexico, Brazil and Ecuador are at the bottom of the list, recognizing only seven or eight holidays a year.
