Counterfeit whey protein: learn how to recognize pirated supplement

2024-02-16 05:00:40

The whey protein food supplement has not escaped the fate of very successful products. Counterfeit versions of the protein concentrate are being sold clandestinely.

In addition to not producing the expected effects, pirated whey protein can be very harmful to your health. Since 2022, the National Health Surveillance Agency (Anvisa) has been warning regarding counterfeit supplements.

Pirate products often use starch or powdered milk to replace whey protein. When shakes prepared with counterfeit powder are ingested, the taste is even similar to that of the real supplement. The preparation, however, will contain more carbohydrates than proteins.

Another problem is that counterfeit whey protein may be contaminated with microorganisms, as there is no way to guarantee the necessary safety when packaging. Finally, another considerable risk is that people with allergies or dietary restrictions unknowingly eat foods that are harmful to them.

“People with diabetes can, for example, suffer blood sugar spikes following taking a counterfeit substance”, points out nutritionist Janaina Porto Alegre, consultant at Probiotica, a company that manufactures whey protein.

Nutritionist Janaina Porto Alegre suggests that consumers choose trusted brands and stores to buy their supplements. “If you don’t have a fixed supplier, you can ask the healthcare professionals who work with you for tips,” she advises.

Another suggestion is to check the manufacturer’s website to compare packaging. It is also common for brands to have seals and security seals to prevent counterfeits.

Furthermore, following ingesting the first doses, fake whey begins to show signs in the body. “Side effects tend to be bloating, intestinal discomfort and sudden changes in the functioning of the body. If the individual was already using whey in their diet and begins to experience these symptoms, they should be concerned and seek specialized guidance”, adds Janaina.
