Countdown to 2024 Elections: Belgian Politics, European Union Presidency, and Campaign Notebook

We are 154 days away from the next regional, federal and European elections. In the pages of this new campaign notebook, we find the wishes of the parties, the Belgian presidency of the European Union, an MR candidate who likes far-right ideas and policies which are launching… in the bloopers.

Wearing a broad smile, Elio Di Rupo, Georges-Louis Bouchez, Paul Magnette and Alexander De Croo were keen to present their end-of-year greetings by wishing an “excellent new year 2024 to all” as well as “ Happy Holidays”.

But in the minds of politicians, this year 2024, there is above all a ballot paper. “2024 will be an important year”, underlines Alexander De Croo, our Prime Minister (Open Vld). “2024 will be a lively year with, as you know, general elections in June”, recalls Paul Magnette, president of the Socialist Party. “This year 2024 which will be victorious for the Reform Movement”, rejoices Georges-Louis Bouchez, president of the French-speaking liberals.

Victorious for the MR perhaps. But to do this, you have to find the right program and the right candidates. A large part was unveiled this Sunday in Louvain-La-Neuve. And among them, Marc Ysaye, former director of Classic 21, drummer and founder of the rock group Machiavelli. “A little more sinister. You give him a straight shot”he said on the sidelines of a concert in October 1989.

And the right is now him, with even a slight penchant for far-right publications. On Twitter or

“When we like a sentence at a given moment, simply because we agree with the sentence. But that’s not why we adhere to the ideas of the person and even less of a party. I have no affinity with the extreme right. None”assures today Marc Ysaye, MR candidate in the elections.

Let’s take a little height, our head in the European stars. Belgium has now chaired the Council of the European Union since January 1. We were therefore treated to the official logo revealed by hauling horses. We were treated to a session of hugs, checks and kisses with members of the European Commission. We were able to see a prestigious concert to launch the six months of the presidency.

That’s for the festive aspect because a presidency at the time of the electoral campaign can spoil a party. “It’s one of the most relaxed moments before 6 months which will be intensive turbin”predicts Thomas Dermine, PS secretary of state for recovery. “I’m not sure it’s going to get tough this weekend. But in any case, we’re already there. And there’s a lot of work to be done in a very short time in the end,” assures Didier Reynders, European Commissioner MR. “It’s a rather special presidency all the same.” believes Petra De Sutter, Deputy Prime Minister Groen.

Finally, I have been informed that politicians have decided to engage in end-of-year bloopers. “I’m hot as a house”, launches Adrien Dolimont, Walloon budget minister MR. “Thanks to the socialists”is wrong Karine Lalieux, PS pensions minister.

Politically, this is of no use. Except perhaps to appear nice and funny. That’s all, for our campaign diary. And don’t forget, we vote in 154 days.
