The vote on lifting the ban on the sale of alcohol at Migros began this week. In all, the 2.3 million cooperators of the orange giant have received their voting material and are called upon to vote by June 4. Within the Neuchâtel-Fribourg cooperative, no less than 126,031 people can tip the scales.
Tight vote
In the case of 9 of the 10 Migros cooperatives in Switzerland, the sales ban will be lifted with a majority of two thirds of the votes. On the Geneva side, a simple majority will be applied, i.e. 50% + 1 vote.
In recent months, the number of cooperators has increased in the country – there are 17,000 additional members since January – but this should not have a major impact on the vote.
No alcohol on the shelves before 2023
Namely that if the text passes, the entry into force is scheduled for July 1, an extremely short period. However, there is no risk of seeing alcohol on the shelves of Migros in Switzerland this summer. According to the company, if accepted, the implementation will be done by the beginning of 2023.
According to a Tamedia poll published a month ago, the Swiss seem rather skeptical regarding the idea of selling alcohol at Migros. They were 58% to be clearly or rather once morest. Some voices have also been raised, accusing the orange giant of no longer respecting the will of the founder Gottlieb Duttweiler. /jha
