Could the Anaheim Ducks be tempted to acquire William Nylander from the Toronto Maple Leafs?
NHL Network analyst Mike Rupp believes the California squad is the best-placed team in the National Hockey League to trade with Toronto.
“The Maple Leafs haven’t had a high draft pick in a few years. The Ducks should take the opportunity to make an offer,” Rupp said Monday night.
Since the selection of Auston Matthews first overall in 2016, the Maple Leafs have selected only once in the top 15 in the first round. In 2020, their choice fell on Rodion Amirov, who died of a brain tumor last week.
“Nylander is one of the most underrated players in the league. He would fit perfectly into the Ducks’ lineup,” continued Rupp, mentioning in passing that the Zegras, Carlsson, Fantilli and Terry would benefit from the experience of a Nylander.
Also according to the analyst, the Maple Leafs will find common ground to extend Matthews’ contract, which would push Nylander towards the exit door.
Both players are completing the final year of their contract. The American will earn $11.6 million this season, while the Swede will get his hands on $6.9 million.
