The Council of Ministers January 18, 2023 heard a report s from Industrial Development, Trade, Crafts and
of small and medium-sized enterprises made a communication to the Council relating
to the mid-term situation of the 2022-2023 cotton campaign and the
preparation for the next 2023-2024 campaign.
It appears that the 2022-2023 cotton campaign was marked by an exceptional surge in fertilizer prices on the markets. To remedy this situation, the cotton sector has
benefited from a subsidy on the prices of inputs (fertilizers and insecticides)
76.8 billion CFA francs including 72.8 billion CFA francs in subsidies
granted by the Burkinabè State.
Nationally, the report notes, the production of conventional seed cotton for
2022-2023 campaign would reach 482,585 tonnes, i.e. a drop of 7% compared to
compared to the previous campaign.
The areas sown are 617,607 hectares, an increase of 4%. The
average yields are down 10% and stand at 781
kilograms per hectare.
Council was informed that following the massive jassid infestations observed during this
2022-2023 campaign in the countries of the sub-region, the Regional Program for
integrated cotton production in Africa (PR-PICA) initiated a meeting
meeting of the main players in the cotton sector on the subject
from November 14 to 17, 2022 in Lomé, Togo.
The ministerial departments concerned by the problem of the Jassids
will engage in urgent consultations with a view to obtaining a derogation for
the use of identified products (GRACIA 10 EC, JACOBIA and Flonicamide
050 WG) to fight the plague.
