The Group plans to produce 487,000 tonnes of white sugar in 2024

The Cosumar Group has just revealed its ambitions for the new agricultural campaign. It adopts a program of 57,000 hectares of sugar plants for a target production of 487,000 tonnes of white sugar in 2024. Details.

Cosumar is approaching the new agricultural campaign with an ambition focused on a program of 57,000 hectares of sugar plants for a target production of 487,000 tonnes of white sugar in 2024. This is what the Group announced in a press release specifying that this attests to the commitment of the Moroccan sugar sector to increasing national sugar production, while remaining aware that the achievement of these objectives essentially depends on the continued availability of irrigation water.

For this campaign, Cosumar has scheduled an increase in the areas planned for sugar beet cultivation, potentially amounting to 54,000 hectares (i.e. 13,000 hectares in Doukkala, 14,000 hectares in Tadla, 6,000 hectares in Oriental, 15,000 hectares in Gharb and 6,000 hectares in Loukkos), compared to 34,000 last year. The cultivation of sugar cane aims for the planting of 3,000 additional hectares shared between the Gharb and Loukkos regions. On the input side, the Cosumar Group indicates that it has secured an amount exceeding 500 MDH for the supply of seeds, fertilizers and phytosanitary products.

“For fertilizers such as Urea 46 and ammonitrate 33.5, the prices subsidized by the State were set respectively at 330 DH and 240 DH per quintal, contrasting with the 1,200 DH and 700 DH of the previous campaign , which had experienced, as a reminder, unprecedented price inflation,” specifies the same source adding that for potash, prices have also been revised downwards compared to last year, thus allowing farmers to make savings substantial overall on fertilizers of up to 4,000 DH per hectare, depending on the region. Regarding seed, its price remains stable compared to last year, notes the same source.

In this sense, a complete list of prices is displayed in all authorized distribution centers of the Cosumar Group. But that’s not all. Cosumar has decided to grant a rescheduling of debts arising from the 2022/2023 agricultural campaign to support its partner farmers. “This approach will be implemented according to precise criteria defined and adapted to the level of each sugar perimeter. It mainly aims to reduce the financial burden on partner farmers. The Group also has an important pillar for this agricultural season, namely the new “Sugar cane recovery plan” concluded within the framework of a partnership between the State and the sugar industry and applicable over a period spanning the next 4 years.

“A subsidy of 8,000 DH per hectare will thus be granted to farmers for new sugar cane plantations. This additional support jointly financed by the State and the Cosumar Group comes on top of the usual bonus of 6,000 DH per hectare granted by the State, thus totaling aid of 14,000 DH for each hectare of newly planted sugar cane. explains the same source. And added: “We aim to cultivate an additional 3,000 hectares each year, divided between 2,000 hectares in the Gharb region and 1,000 hectares in Loukkos.” Thus, this plan is part of a medium-term vision for the extension of sugar cane cultivation to 12,000 hectares by 2030.
