A large crowd of people flocked to Costco, a warehouse-type store that opened in Shenzhen, Guangdong Province, China, on the 12th. According to Hong Kong’s South China Morning Post (SCMP) and local media outlet Singtao Daily, customers flocked in even before the store opened in the morning, with long lines forming along the iron fence outside the store and sometimes taking more than three hours to enter.
The store was crowded from this morning, and popular items such as strawberries and cherries were quickly sold out. Local media reported that fruit, bread, frozen meat, and seafood were particularly popular. One Shenzhen resident told China Daily, “I arrived at 8 am this morning and just bought more than 2,000 yuan (regarding 370,000 won). There are too many people now, so I plan to come back this evening.”

Foreign media outlets analyzed that demand for cheap daily necessities has increased due to slowing Chinese economic growth, and as the Hong Kong dollar has strengthened once morest the Yuan, the number of people coming from Hong Kong to mainland China to shop has increased. Sam’s Club, operated by Walmart, is already very popular in the Shenzhen area.
Complaints poured in as limited discount items sold out quickly that day. Shenzhen resident Zhao Yingchun told SCMP, “The strawberries were cheaper by regarding 30 yuan per 500g, but they ran out quickly before noon, and only 100 bottles of Moutai liquor advertised by Costco were available, which was not enough for customers.” He added, “I just bought shrimp, but I’m not sure if it’s cheaper than the nearby Sam’s Club.”

The store that opened in Shenzhen on this day is the sixth Costco store in China. It is a four-story store with a total area of 44,500 m2 (13,500 pyeong) and a shopping space of 15,000 m2 (4,500 pyeong). About 4,000 famous brand products supplied by Chinese and overseas companies are on display. Costco previously opened its first store in China in Shanghai in August 2019, and closed the first day of business early due to the large crowds.
